What Is Cylinder Snapping?
Cylinder snapping is a method used to break into doors fitted with euro cylinder locks, commonly found on uPVC and composite doors.
Instead of picking the lock, the cylinder is physically broken at its weakest point. Once that happens, the internal mechanism can be accessed and the door opened.
This method is widely known because it is quick and does not require specialist tools.
If your door uses a standard euro cylinder, it may be vulnerable depending on the type and how it is fitted.
How Lock Snapping Works
Most modern doors use a multipoint locking system, but all of those locking points rely on a single part, the cylinder.
If the cylinder fails, the rest of the locking system becomes ineffective.
Cylinder snapping works by applying force to the exposed section of the cylinder. Once it breaks, access can be gained to the internal cam, which allows the lock to be turned.
Even though the door may have multiple locking points, they all depend on that one cylinder working properly.
How Quickly Can It Happen?
In many cases, cylinder snapping can take just a few seconds.
That speed is what makes it a concern. It does not rely on noise or complex tools, which makes it more opportunistic than technical.
It is not always the method used, but it is common enough that it is worth understanding.
